CHALLENGE
Micronutrient Deficiencies
$1 MILLION (Prize amount to be confirmed. Announcement expected for next year)
Micronutrient deficiency or dietary deficiency is not enough of one or more of the micronutrients required for optimal plant or animal health. In humans they include both vitamin deficiencies and mineral deficiencies.
Micronutrient deficiencies affect more than two billion people of all ages in both developing and industrialized countries. They are the cause of some diseases, exacerbate others and are recognized as having an important impact on worldwide health. Important micronutrients include iodine, iron, zinc, calcium, selenium, fluorine, and vitamins A, B6, B12, B1, B2, B3, B9 and C.
Micronutrient deficiencies are associated with 10% of all children’s deaths, and are therefore of special concern to those involved with child welfare.
We need way to solve this challenge by avoiding nutritional deficiency in foods that are used as well as allowing access to all population to the diets that can allow to avoid the problems associated with deficiencies.
