An  artificial womb is a device that would allow for extracorporeal pregnancy by growing a fetus outside the body of an organism that would normally carry the fetus to term.

Such device would be crucial to prevent the death of approximately 830 women a day for causes related to pregnancy.

Besides such a device could eliminate all pregnancy related diseases or unconfortable conditions for million of women around the world, guaranteeing a safe and controlled , disease free conditions for future babies while allowing their mothers to go on their working activities without interruptions due to pregnancy conditions.

It could also help in fetal surgery procedures or gene engineering eliminations of cancerous cells in the fetus.

Artificial wombs can also be utilized in the future in space related missions or colonization by allowing birth in extraterrestrial conditions in perfectly controlled conditions.

This competition calls for proposals of artificial wombs that could be manufactured and ready to use in minimum time with top efficiency and safety conditions.

Proposal:

This is a two phase competition:

  • Phase 1: Written proposals, (max 40 pages including images) about the technologies and systems that would be utilized will select the five finalist teams that would proceed to phase 2
  • Phase 2: To realize the required prototype and experiments under controlled conditions to prove the validity of their concept proposal.
